Ship it ugly

Every product I have shipped started uglier than I wanted. The first version of everything I build embarrasses me a little. I ship it anyway.

The trap

The trap is thinking polish comes before users. It does not. Users come first, then you learn what actually needs polish. Most of the things I was going to perfect never mattered to anyone.

What I do instead

I give myself a rule: the first version has to go out the door while it still feels too early. If a stranger can use it and the core thing works, it ships. The rest is a changelog.

Polish is a reward the product earns, not a gift you give it up front.
